How To Build A Poker Bankroll
If you intend on playing poker for profit, the first step will be to build a bankroll. It doesn't matter if you're starting out with $50 or $1,000, the only difference is the amount of time it takes to build a considerable bankroll. Below we've outlined the quickest and most efficient ways of building a poker bankroll.
Sign-Up Bonuses
Every single online poker site tries to attract new poker players by offering lucrative first time deposit bonuses which can range anywhere from 20% up to 100%. In order to obtain the deposit you'll need to play a certain amount of cash game or tournaments and accumulate points. The logic behind these deposit bonuses is the online poker rooms give you back the money you paid in rake fees.
Full Tilt Poker offers a 100% first time deposit bonus up to $600. So for each dollar that is raked in a cash game you earn one Full Tilt point. For tournament games you earn 7 points for every dollar in entry fees. These points are worth $.06 each. Your bonus is released in 10% increments or $20 depending on the amount of your initial deposit.
Always read the fine print before signing up to a new online poker site. Some often have minimum deposit conditions, or a maximum time period within which the points must be earned.
Some online poker sites also offer a sign-up bonus without an initial deposit. PitBull Poker and VC Poker offer $10 to anyone who signs up for a new account and an additional $25 if you accumulate 1,500 points.
Freerolls
Freerolls are very time consuming and the odds of you winning against a field of 1,000 players are stacked against you. If you have the patience to follow through, freerolls are a great way of making a 100% profit and a good way to start building a bankroll from scratch.
Sit & Go Tournaments
If you are new to online poker you should start with sit and go tournaments. It is an excellent way to get some good practice and win a few dollars in the process. The competition at the lower levels such as $2+$0.25 or $3+$0.30 is very low and by playing tight poker you'll be able to cruise through to the paid places. First place for a $2+$0.25 18 player tournament pays $14 which means a $11.75 profit. A few of these and you can easily build a $100 bankroll within a week. Once you feel comfortable enough at the low levels you can re-invest your winnings into the higher entry fee tournaments. A $10+$1 18 player s&g pays $72 for first place.
Many online poker sites also offer heads-up 1 on 1 sit and go tournaments. A $10+1 s&g pays $20 for first place. Practice at the lower $2+$0.25 levels and move up gradually.
Cash Games
This is where the real money is in poker. Cash games offer a great way to make a quick profit, but they are a completely different beast and not recommended for the beginner poker player. You should still test the waters at the low limit $0.05/$0.10 games and you can still make a sizable sum of money with the average pot being $0.50-$1. Gradually increase the stakes as you can constantly break even in these stakes. Once you reach the $1/$2 level you can easily start turning a $20 profit on a single hand.
The most important thing to remember when building a bankroll is to never play more than your current bankroll allows. Your bankroll should always be on average 300x the BB for playing in cash games. Additionally you should never have your entire bankroll invested in one game.
